Kidney Disease Treatment in Opelousas
The human body has its own built-in cleansers, and the kidneys are a significant part our natural cleansing system. We have two kidneys, each one located on opposite sides of the spine. The kidneys filter waste from the blood and send it to the bladder to be discarded. If your kidneys are not working correctly, then the toxins in the waste can cause severe damage to your body. This is known as kidney disease. Kidney disease can affect your heart, your other organs, and various systems in your body.
There are multiple causes of chronic kidney disease, which is developed over time and does not go away. High blood pressure and diabetes are two of the most common causes. High blood pressure will put pressure on the vessels in the kidneys. As more pressure is placed on these vessels, the damage will increase over time and if left untreated, the affected kidneys can eventually fail.
RAS / FMD
Some known causes for advanced kidney disease or resistant hypertension involve renal artery stenosis (RAS) which is blockage or narrowing of one or both of the renal arteries, and a condition called fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD). Fibromuscular dysplasia is caused by abnormal cellular overgrowth within the renal artery. Both of these conditions limit blood flow to the affected kidney.
In certain clinical scenarios renal artery stenosis (RAS) may be treated with a balloon or stent to restore blood flow. Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) Usually responds very favorably to balloon angioplasty.
